A Nation with Strong Learning Power: Students from Wenzhou University Invent Bionic Crab-shaped Robot to Battle Ampullaria Gigas

Ampullaria gigas eggs contain a large amount of parasites and pose great danger to the growth of aquatic crops.

The research team comprised of Congyu Mao, Weifeng Hu, Jintao Liu, Zhuji Qu and Ke Liu from the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering decided to conduct mechanical design to eliminate the impact of ampullaria gigas eggs, which will not only protect the environment but also address the concerns and challenges faced by the farmers.

After three months’ hard work, they designed an intelligent bionic crab-shaped ampullaria gigas egg processor. This device is small and shapes like a cute crab.

This device is comprised of five parts. When placed in the field, the recognition mechanism of this device is able to accurately locate the ampullaria gigas eggs; the lower movable mechanism consists of four pairs of bionic mechanical legs so that it can move back and forth and turn around; the upper left-arm removal mechanism and right-arm clamping mechanism will work together so that the right arm can hold onto the root of the seedlings and left arm can remove the ampullaria gigas eggs on the seedlings and send the eggs to the crushing unit at the mouth. The crushed ampullaria gigas eggs can be directly discharged into the rice paddies and reused as fertilizer. This device is rechargeable and each charging can guarantee one hour’s continuous operation which is enough to meet rice paddy processing needs.

Currently the research team has applied for one patent for invention and four patents for utility models for this design.
